In response to the Supreme Court decision in Americans for Prosperity Foundation v. Bonta, National Council of Nonprofits President and CEO Tim Delaney released the following statement:
“The Court, splitting 6-3 on ideological grounds, took away a law-enforcement tool that will now make it harder for state charities officials to discourage, identify, and prosecute fraud in the charitable sector. The Court’s ruling will make it easier for individuals and special interests to hide their partisan spending to influence elections from the public and for scam artists to defraud taxpayers. Because this change will influence laws far beyond California, charitable organizations have both an opportunity and obligation to work closely with their state charities law enforcement officials to develop new tools to prevent fraudsters and scam artists from destroying public trust and hurting the work of nonprofits in local communities throughout the country.”
